Along with sunny days and humid temps, come pool accidents and ATV accidents that can result in serious injury or even fatalities. Listed below are some important safety tips for pool and ATV users.
Safety tips for pools:
- Teach children to swim. Statistics show that 76 percent of drowning deaths each year involve children under 5 years old.
- Teach children to stay away from drains and suction outlets. Hair, bathing suits and more can get tangled in a drain causing the child to be unable to reach the top of the pool.
- Install proper barriers, which include fencing, gates and security covers.
- Remove ladders on above ground pools when not in use.
- Avoid alcohol while swimming.
- Never swim alone.
- Have floatation devices on hand.
- Learn CPR. Go to redcross.org or contact your local fire station to get CPR certified.
Safety tips for ATV’s:
- Do not allow children to drive ATV’s by themselves. Reports show that 3,163 ATV fatalities involved children under 16, with 44 percent being under the age of 12.
- Always wear a helmet.
- Only ride in familiar areas.
- Avoid alcohol when operating an ATV.
- Ride at safe speeds.
